Get to know: Luke Walker
After three weeks in his new role, we caught up with new SPA recruit, Luke Walker, to see how he was getting on and to get to know a bit more about him.
Let’s see how the Livingston local found his way to SPA!
What is your role and what will you be doing at SPA?
I’m the new Marketing Assistant here at the SPA and my primary focus is managing various marketing aspects of the regional business, from content creation through case studies to managing the social media calendar and more. I am very excited to hopefully make this role my own and show the company what I can do. I attended my induction in London and was blown away by the positivity around the company from it’s own people, how much the company values innovation and the journeys people have made in the with LHC.
Tell us a bit about your background and how you got into this role?
After finishing school in 2012, I moved to Burnley, England to complete a Football Business and Media BA Honours Degree with UCFB. Looking to build on the theoretical knowledge gained from uni I found volunteer roles in sport to help boost those skills after uni. I had built key marketing skills from full time positions with Forth Valley Student Association and from my most previous employer; Guide Dogs. After this six year journey I have been brought into the SPA fold and I am excited to progress further into a marketing career but also work for a company that is a leader in it’s industry that is hugely active in it’s community.
What attracted you to join SPA?
Something that makes SPA standout from the rest is the work the organisation does in the community. It has a real impact on society throughout Scotland through the Community Benefit Fund and the Lintel Trust whilst being a well run company that looks to be expanding year on year. Also from a marketing perspective, working for a company that values innovation from all of its members is something that really sells it for me . Throughout the remainder of my career I want to feel like I am able to let my creativity flow and to feel that my work is helping the community around me.
What are you passionate about and what do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love football. It’s literally my life, whether it is watching, playing or talking about the beautiful game. I play football for Bathgate Thistle and hopefully next season I will be the owner of a club. The league is designed to help guys lose weight and to tackle mental health issues, two societal problems that sit very close to my heart.
What are you most excited about in your role as Marketing Assistant?
I am most excited about being able to showcase my knowledge and expertise as well as developing key marketing skills to really flourish in this industry.
